Valley Lee, MD— On July 31, St.Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Siciliano responded to the area of Flat Iron Road in Valley Lee for the report of a theft/burglary.ย 

When Siciliano arrived on the scene a witness was observed following the suspect as he was walking down Flat Iron Road. The suspect was identified as Paul R. Riley, 46, of Valley Lee.ย 

Riley was observed to be carrying a tool box in one hand and a tool bag in the other. Sicilanoย instructedย Riley to stop walking and sit on the curb.ย 

Siciliano asked the witness what happened at which time he advised, “He was at his boss’ house located next door. The witness advised he heard a noise coming from the trailer on the property. He advised that Riley was walking in and out of the trailer as well,” according to charging documents.

The witness watched Riley take apart piecesย of an air conditioning unit as well as bring a curtain rod from the inside of the residence outside. The witness walked over to the residence and asked Riley what he was up to at which time Riley said, “He was getting metal to bring to the scrap yard for money,” according to charging documents.ย 

Siciliano was able to observe the air conditioning unit completely taken apart. Siciliano noticed that there was not forced entry to the residence, however, the witness advised the residence was already unlocked.ย 

In Riley’s possession were a variety of burglar tools, including a pocket knife, a file, Allen wrenches, an impact drill and a hammer. Riley was read his Miranda rights which he waived.ย Riley informed Siciliano that he was trying to get metal so he could get some money to feed his “grandkids.”ย 

Riley was transported to the St.Mary’s County Detention Center where he was charged with first-degree burglary, third-degree burglary, theftย $1,000 to $10,000, malicious property destruction and fourth-degree burglary/tools.

Riley has a tentativeย preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 30 in District Court. Riley has had his bond set at $5,000, Riley faces a maximum jail sentence ofย 46 years and/or a maximum fine of $12,500.ย
