Monday, May 25 is Memorial Day. It is a day set aside for all Americans to honor those citizens that have paid the ultimate sacrifice to this country by protecting our freedoms in the most dire of circumstances – war.
This year, the National Moment of Remembrance is encouraging all Americans to take a moment from whatever they are doing and wherever they might be to pause for a moment of silence to remember and honor those brave men and women who died in service to their country. The effort is set for 3 p.m. local time across the country. Moment of Remembrance founder Carmella LaSpada stated: “It’s a way we can all help put the memorial back in Memorial Day.”
According to the Web site, http://www1.va.gov/opa/speceven/memday/history.asp#hist Moment of Remembrance was created, “to ensure the sacrifices of America ’s fallen heroes are never forgotten, in December 2000, the U.S. Congress passed and the president signed into law ’The National Moment of Remembrance Act,’ … creating the White House Commission on the National Moment of Remembrance. The commission’s charter is to ‘encourage the people of the United States to give something back to their country, which provides them so much freedom and opportunity’ by encouraging and coordinating commemorations in the United States of Memorial Day and the National Moment of Remembrance.”
Given the nature of the Southern Maryland community; heavily involved with many different aspects of the military, it would be a grand showing of support for all our armed forces if all of us here in the Tri-County area took a minute at 3 p.m. on Monday, May 25. We should join forces and completely stop everything were are doing – driving, barbequing, watching ball games and so on in a united single minute of silence.
Just think how loud that silence will be as we say in silent unison we honor all those serving and who have served and have fought and died for our way of life. The staff of TheBAYNET.com will do so proudly. Every TBN reader is encouraged to join us for one minute.
