Hotline number established for citizens affected by evacuation

A residential propane delivery tanker overturned on Bensville Road (Route 229) near Carrie Court in Waldorf at approximately 9:37 a.m. today, March 7. Bensville Road between Route 228 and Zoll Lane remains closed as emergency crews work at the scene.

Residents living on Valley Drive, Sedgeland Court, Carrie Court, Shannon Drive, Poplar Court and Paperbirch Court have been evacuated. Access to these areas is restricted at this time.ย  Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling nearby and should use alternate routes to avoid restricted area.

The road closure and evacuation of these areas will delay dismissal of certain Charles County Public Schools students at a number of schools this afternoon, especially William A. Diggs Elementary School, Theodore G. Davis Middle School and North Point High School in Waldorf.

If you live in one of these areas, your child will not be dismissed from school. Students will remain at school, where parents can pick their children up after the end of the school day. Other buses may need to be rerouted, which could cause later drop-off times. Charles County Public Schools has notified the parents of any children affected by the change.

Residents should call 301-609-3535 with questions about this incident and the status of the evacuations. Call 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency.
