At 11:29 a.m. on June 3, Charles County Sheriff’s officers responded to the La Plata Exxon located at 6670 Crain Highway in La Plata for the report of an armed robbery.
Investigation revealed the suspect entered the store, made a purchase and asked if a manager was on duty. An employee, a 37-year-old Woodbridge, Va., man, told the suspect he was the only person in the store; the suspect then left the store.
The suspect returned a short time later. He gave the employee a note demanding money and brandished a handgun. The employee complied with his demand and the robber fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.
During the course of the investigation officers received a tip from a citizen and obtained information indicating Joseph Leon Savoy, III, 19, of Newburg was responsible for the robbery.
He was arrested on June 7 and charged with armed robbery, robbery, first- and second-degree assault and theft. Savoy was being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before the District Court Commissioner.
