TheBayNet, Southern Maryland’s largest on-line news outlet, is deeply saddened to report that the president and publisher Sharon Bell has terminal cancer and stepped down from her operational duties and has restructured the management of the company.
“My time is short,” Sharon Bell said. “And I have to take care of my affairs and spend the remaining time God grants me with my family.”
National and Associated Press award-winning investigative journalist, columnist and author, MJ Brickey, has assumed the role of interim publisher.
“If I could change one thing, it would be that I hadn’t worked so much,” Bell said. “I thought I would be able to retire and spend my time being a housewife, mother, grandmother, and be with my family, but not under these circumstances.”
Bell was diagnosed earlier this year with an inoperable terminal illness and is currently seeking treatment at Cancer Centers of America, in Philadelphia, Pa.
“There is a medication that I have been told may cure my cancer. However, unfortunately, I cannot afford it, and my insurance has denied it. That seems to be what I hear most from my insurance company,” Bell said.
Many of the treatments and medical procedures are not covered by insurance. Bell’s family has been spending thousands per month in medical costs.
“It hasn’t been easy,” she said. “But, all is now in place for a seamless transition.”
