The Wait Is Over: Walls Bakery Reopens After Major Utility Line Collapse

WALDORF, Md. —Walls Bakery reopened Tuesday, July 21, after a major utility line collapse forced the longtime Southern Maryland bakery to remain closed for more than three weeks.

The bakery resumed regular business hours at 7 a.m. Tuesday after announcing Monday that the extensive repair work had been completed.

“The repairs we needed took much longer than we anticipated, but I’m happy to report, all is well, back to normal, and we can get back to serving our wonderful customers and local community with sweet and delicious Walls Bakery baked goods,” owner MJ Walls wrote on Facebook.

Walls also thanked AB&H Excavation for completing the repair work and customers for their patience, encouragement and support throughout the closure.

“We look forward to serving you once again, starting tomorrow, and well into the future,” Walls wrote Monday.

Closure Began In Late June

The bakery initially announced Friday, June 26, that it would close Saturday, June 27, after what Walls described as a catastrophic collapse of a major utility line serving the industrial park.

The line ran through the industrial park and into neighboring businesses, and the closure was initially expected to last only two days while repairs were completed.

However, Walls announced Sunday, June 28, that the repair project had become more extensive than initially anticipated and that the bakery would remain closed until further notice.

“Given the extent of the repair work that needs to be done here, due to a major utility disruption, Walls Bakery will have to close temporarily as of Sunday, June 28, 2026, until further notice,” Walls wrote at the time.

Walls said the project would significantly disrupt the bakery’s daily operations, including work inside its kitchen.

“This will be a very big repair project and it will disrupt our kitchen operations until it is complete, so at the moment, we have to go with what we are being told,” Walls wrote.

Throughout the closure, Walls continued updating customers and said the bakery would return as soon as the repairs were completed.

“Walls Bakery will be back as soon as we can,” Walls wrote in June.
