For two hours on Tuesday, July 2, in Leonardtown Square in the heart of the historic county seat, the Air National Guard Band of the Mid-Atlantic presented an exciting brand of patriotic music, classical, swing favorites, show tunes and more.
More than 250 onlookers were treated to fascinating programs, which had something to please everyone, including toe-tapping marches, a musical tribute honoring Americaโs servicemen and women and a heart-wrenching performance of John Williamsโ Hymn to the Fallen; a dramatic ballad set to the words of Ret. General Colin Powell and narrated by MSgt. James Yoder.
According to Laschelle Miller, Leonardtown town administrator, the band actually contacted the town and asked if they would like a free concert.
โWe fed them lunch at Kevinโs Corner Cafรฉ, which the band enjoyed very much,” Miller said. “That was our only expense.โ
Miller indicated that local restaurants stayed open so patrons could eat after the concert.
The Air National Guard Band consists of 36 members. The members with civilian careers meet one weekend a month to rehearse and perform. Its ranks are filled with professional musicians, educators, students, administrators, salesmen, builders and other professionals.
The Band of the Mid-Atlantic has a reputation as one of the finest bands in the Air National Guard.
