“First customer” Sharon Holland Gray cuts the opening day ribbon at Marshalls in Dunkirk’s Shoppes at Apple Greene.
Dunkirk, MD – A national retail icon is the first store to officially open for business in the all-new Shoppes at Apple Greene. Marshalls—a variety store that sells clothes, kitchen appliances and even gourmet coffee—welcomed customers with much fanfare Thursday morning, Aug. 16.
“It’s a treasure hunt,” declared Calvert County Chamber of Commerce CEO Bob Carpenter, who recalled his first shopping experience at a Marshalls some 30 years ago in California.
“Welcome to the neighborhood,” said Chesapeake Church Pastor Robert P. Hahn, who accepted a $10,000 check from Marshalls’ local store manager Taryn King on behalf of End Hunger in Calvert County. Hahn noted that he was wearing a shirt he bought at a Marshalls store in Anne Arundel County. He told TheBayNet.com that in addition to their generosity to the local charity, Marshalls presence in Northern Calvert County will provide employment opportunities. It also gives Calvert residents further impetus to shop locally.
A crowd slowly gathered as the opening hour approached. Sharon Holland Gray of St. Leonard had arrived ahead of the others and King selected her to be the “first customer.” With that honor bestowed, at 8 a.m. King handed Gray a large pair of scissors. On cue, Gray cut the blue ribbon and the other customers followed her into the store.
Later this summer a new Harris Teeter, the Shoppes other anchor store, is expected to open. The Shoppes at Apple Greene is located off northbound Route 4 and Ward Road in Dunkirk.
