St. Mary’s County Opens Registration For Middle School Basketball And Cheer Tryouts

ST. MARY’S COUNTY, Md. — For local middle school students eager to return to the basketball court or cheer from the sidelines, the first step toward the upcoming season is now underway.

St. Mary’s County Recreation & Parks has opened online registration for its 2026-27 Middle School Select Basketball and Cheer tryouts. Registration for the tryouts is free and open to students in grades 6-8.

Girls’ basketball and cheer tryouts will be held during the second week of September, followed by boys’ basketball tryouts during the third week. Specific dates and locations will be provided during the registration process.

Who Can Try Out?

Participants must try out for the team representing the St. Mary’s County middle school they attend. Homeschooled students must try out for the middle school serving the attendance zone in which they live.

Registering for tryouts does not guarantee a place on a Select League team. However, students who do not make a Select team will still have an opportunity to register for the county’s recreational basketball league.

Families can register for tryouts through the county’s youth sports registration portal.

Season Registration Opens After Tryouts

Registration for the Select League season will open Sept. 15 for girls’ basketball and cheer. Registration for boys’ basketball will open Sept. 22.

Families who qualify for financial assistance through the Recreation & Parks Scholarship Program must complete the online scholarship application before registering for the basketball season.
