CLINTON, MD – One of the nationโ€™s top interventional cardiologists, Mun K. Hong, MD, FACC has joined the MedStar Southern Maryland Hospitalโ€™s medical staff as chair of the department of cardiology.

โ€œWe are pleased to make this announcement,โ€ said Christine Wray, FACHE, hospital president. โ€œHeart disease is still the number-one killer of men and women in Maryland, according to the American Heart Association. The residents of Southern Maryland deserve access to the best cardiac care in their community, and Dr. Hong is a great addition to the MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute team.โ€

Dr. Hong comes to MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center after nine years as director of the cardiac catheterization lab and interventional cardiology at Mount Sinai St. Lukeโ€™s Hospital in Manhattan. Before joining Mount Sinai St. Lukeโ€™s, he spent seven years as Cornell Hospitalโ€™s director of cardiovascular intervention and research. Although he has spent much of his career in New York City, Dr. Hong has a strong connection to the Washington, D.C. area. He earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he also underwent internship and residency training. He went on to complete fellowships in both cardiology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and interventional cardiology at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where he later practiced for seven years. He has held faculty appointments at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical College, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Mount Sinai Icahn School of Medicine. He is board certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology.

In addition to being a highly skilled clinician, Dr. Hong has advanced the field of interventional cardiology through a prolific research career. He has published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. He co-edited Acute Coronary Syndrome: Multidisciplinary and Pathway-Based Approach, published in 2008.

โ€œI am grateful to have the opportunity to focus on clinical work at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center, and I welcome the challenge of leading this department as it focuses on a collaborative approach to patient-centered care,โ€ Dr. Hong said. โ€œI look forward to helping to make a difference in the quality of care and quality of life among the patients in the community.โ€
