North Beach, MD โ Itโs an insane way to dive into a new year, but it seems every New Yearโs Day the crowd of crazies gets larger in the bayside town of North Beach. Once again, the town is hosting the Polar Bear Plunge. The Jan. 1, 2015 event begins at 1 p.m.
People of all ages participate annually in the dash and splash and while anyone can plunge, those who want the coveted souvenir T-shirt and certificate must register and pay a $25 fee.ย Online registration is being conducted by PayPal. Plungers can also register and pay in person at the North Beach Town Hall through Tuesday, Dec. 30 or at the Welcome Center the day of the event.
All plungers must agree to sign a waiver indemnifying and holding the town harmless from all liabilities, judgments, settlements, losses, costs or charges in the event of bodily injury or death associated with the Polar Bear Plunge.
On Jan. 1, 2014 more than 400 hearty souls endured the frigidityโwater temperature of 36 degrees Fahrenheit and an equivalent outdoor temperature (factoring in wind chill) of 28 degrees Fahrenheitโto participate in the annual plunge. The polar bears came from all over the Southern Maryland area and included many visitors from out of the region and out of state. Several town councilmen also took the chilly dip.
Plungers are welcome to stay and enjoy hot cocoa, and roasted marshmallows at the post-plunge beach party.
