Chesapeake Beach, MD – Chesapeake Beach town officials announced Tuesday, March 22 that motorists can expect traffic delays Saturday due to some much anticipated utility work.
According to a missive from Connie OโDell, the townโs events coordinator, Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) plans to do the work at a Navy facility near the Fishing Creek Bridge.
โBGE has given the [Maryland] State Highway Administration notification that they will be relocating high voltage lines that supply power to the Naval Research Lab,โ OโDell stated. โThis is the first of several steps in relocating overhead power lines to underground in preparation for the Fishing Creek Bridge replacement. Saturdayโs exercise will not affect power to any property except the Naval Research Lab. There will, however, be a flagging operation in the vicinity of the Chesapeake Beach Water Park on Route 261. Expect slight delays due to one-way traffic.โ
The bridge replacement project has been stalled due to the delay in the relocation of utility lines.
Back in early February, former town mayor and Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa owner Gerald Donovan told town residents during a presentation that the planned expansion of the iconic business could not start until the new bridge is completed.
The resort and spa project, which will expand the hotel and restaurant complex, and add a parking facility and multi-unit, multi-story apartment building, was recently granted preliminary approval by the Chesapeake Beach Planning and Zoning Commission.
OโDell has promised town residents that officials will provide information โas soon as possibleโ on the hours crews will be working March 26.
