Vehicles making a left turn from southbound Three Notch Road or traveling straight from eastbound Great Mills Road onto the Patuxent River Naval Air Station (PRNAS) Gate 2 between 6:30 and 8:30AM and 12:00 and 1:30PM continue to block a significant portion of the intersection. As a result, vehicles traveling northbound Three Notch Road are unable to continue straight through the intersection; vehicles wishing to make a left turn out of the PRNAS onto southbound Three Notch Road are unable to do so.
Maryland Vehicle Law ยง21-1003(d), states: a person may not stop, stand, or park a vehicle in an intersection.ย A violation of this traffic law is a $70.00 fine.
In an effort to address the safety concerns of citizens, members of the Traffic Safety Unit, the Lexington Park COPs UNIT, and the Patrol Division, have conducted five, (2 morning/3 afternoon), enforcement operations at Gate 2 over the past several weeks. These operations specifically targeted vehicles stopping in the intersection while entering onto PRNAS.
56 traffic stops were conducted resulting in 16 written citations, 50 written warnings, and 2 verbal warnings.
Motorists are encouraged to drive safely and be patient while entering or exiting PRNAS especially during morning, afternoon, and evening rush-hours. If you are unable to make it completely through the intersection due to the checkpoint back-up you must wait at the intersection for the next traffic light cycle.
