PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County Public Schools Board of Education (BOE) reviewed the most recent financial report at their March 26 meeting — and expressed frustrations with ongoing budget talks at the county level.

Chief Financial Officer Christine Jewett provided an update to unrestricted revenues. According to her report, year-to-date as of the end of February, the district has received total revenue of $179.1 million, which represents about 62% of total budgeted revenue of $288.1 million.

The district receives funds from the county twice per month and from the state six times per year, creating a steady stream of cash flow.

“We expect continued alignment with the adopted budget,” Jewett said, and added that expenditures are also on track with the adopted budget.

Several board members expressed their frustration around the county’s ongoing budget conversation, particularly that the school budget provided by the BOE wasn’t discussed at last week’s Board of County Commissioners’ budget hearing. Board member Melissa Goshorn said she didn’t appreciate the “political games” around the budget and that the BOE’s top priority was to honor contracts and protect staff.

Board members also discussed the possibility of turf fields at Calvert County schools. Commissioner Mike Hart expressed interest in dedicating money to turf fields, and BOE members agreed that investing in turf fields would help the county’s athletic programs and align Calvert with nearby schools. BOE members said they were interested in hearing more about funding and a budget for a possible turf field project.
