Nearly simultaneous crashes this morning involving a total of eight vehicles brought traffic to a crawl on Routes 235 and 5 in St. Mary’s County.

Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.

Volunteer firefighters and rescue squad members were dispatched shortly after 7:15 a.m. to a head-on crash at Route 5 and Hermanville Road, with three cars involved and two hurt.

Minutes later a chain reaction rear-end crash on Route 235 grew in vehicles, to a total of five involved.

Lexington Park Rescue Squad members ran directly from the Route 5 crash to the Route 235 crash after removing one injured female from a pickup truck.

The driver of the totaled-out Mustang on Route 5 was uninjured.

On Route 235 south at the intersection with Gate 1 of Patuxent Naval Air Station, five vehicles were rammed together in the left travel lane.

Traffic was backed up for miles on Route 235 more than an hour after the crash, as only the turn lanes and one other lane were passable.

Route 5 at Hermanville Road was closed for more than an hour, causing a long backup at the Hermanville light at Route 235.

Bay District Volunteer firefighters were aided at the scene with units from Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department and Naval Air Station Fire Department.

Two were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
