At 8:05 p.m. Wednesday two cars collided head-on at the intersection of Route 4 and Wildewood Parkway, resulting in serious injuries for two people involved.
Rescue volunteers from Lexington Park and Hollywood arrived to find two cars in the intersection with considerable front end damage.
Within 15 minutes volunteer firefighters had freed both patients from the vehicles; an 80-year-old female and a 48-year-old male.
Due to the injuries, two emergency helicopters were dispatched to take the injured to regional trauma centers.
Maryland State Police helicopter Trooper 2, based out of Prince Georges County, landed on the scene first, followed by Eagle 1, a U.S. Park Police helicopter.
The closest helicopter, Trooper 7, out of St. Maryโs Airport, was busy transporting a 17-year-old girl who fell off a horse.
Rescue workers cleared the scene shortly after 9 p.m.
