The fire in Smokey Joe’s was discovered by patrons of the restaurant who noticed smoke coming from the ceiling area.ย
Portable fire extinguishers were used to try to put out the fire. The fire was contained to the second floor of the building and was caused by faulty wiring.
Smoke alarms were present in the building but did not activate.
It took 30 fire fighters about 15 minutes to control the flames.
The damage is estimated at $300,000 including structure and contents.
Chesapeake Beach, MD — Calvert County emergency personnel received a report on Sunday, Feb. 8 of a fire in the ceiling at the Smokey Joeโs Grill next to the Rod โN Reel Restaurant in Chesapeake Beach. The fire was called in at 3:53 p.m.
Once the units arrived on the scene and did a check, they found heavy fire in the rear of the building on the second level deck area.ย A working fire was dispatched and additional fire departments responded to the call and other fire departments were sent to cover the Calvert County fire stations while on this call.
At approximately 5:12 p.m. the command officer told all units on the scene that overhaul would be starting. It was decided to hold companies from North Beach, Dunkirk and Huntingtown to handle the first part of the overhaul work. At 5:51 p.m. only North Beach remained on the scene to continue overhaul and work with fire marshal.
