UPDATE: 6 p.m. — Just before 4 p.m. police responded to C. Paul Barnhart Elementary School in Waldorf for loud bang sounds outside the school. The police did a search of the area and were unable to find anything.
At the time of the incident school was not in session however children were in the school for the after school program. Those children were placed under a shelter in place, where they were not to leave the rooms.
Some witness told police that the loud noise sounded like gun shot while others said it sounded like fireworks.
The shelter in place was lifted at 4:20 p.m.

C. Paul Barnhart Elementary School on Lancaster Circle in Waldorf was on lockdown for a short period of time today, September 17, 2013.
The reason for the lockdown has not been confirmed by police officials but a witness reports hearing gun shots outside of the school.
Police are still currently at the school and surrounding areas. More information to come as it becomes available.
