The passenger in a crash late Monday night on Maypole Road, Leonardtown, has died from his injuries.
Timothy J. Knox, 18, of White Plains, succumbed to his injuries at Prince Georges County Hospital, where he was flown after the crash, confirmed Sgt. Steve Hall of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff Office.
Knox was the passenger in a 1999 Chevy passenger vehicle that went off the road for unknown reasons and struck a tree just before 11:30 p.m.
The sheriff’s office crash reconstruction unit is investigating. Primarily, there were no obvious contributing factors, such as speed or alcohol, according to Sgt. Hall.
The driver, a 17-year-old male from La Plata, was taken to Prince Georges County Hospital with serious injuries, where he remained as of this morning.
The first police officer on the scene reported the vehicle was occupied by a white male and a black male, and both were trapped in the vehicle and both unconscious.
Arriving rescue squad members quickly called for a helicopter transport due to the two having head injuries. Helicopters Trooper 7 and Trooper 2 from the Maryland State Police Aviation Command responded.
Volunteer firefighters worked on the wrecked vehicle to free the teens. It was near 30 minutes before firefighters could get the second patient extracted.
