Newburg, MD –  The body of an unidentified woman who leaped off the Gov. Harry Nice Bridge sometime around noon Friday, Nov. 6 has been recovered, authorities in Charles County reported.

Charles County Fire Department spokesman Bill Smith told The BayNet the woman reportedly parked her car in the middle of the span and jumped into the Potomac River. A fisherman traveling near the bridge saw her leap and called 911.
Smith said a boat from the Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department recovered the woman’s body.

The incident is being jointly investigated by the Maryland Transportation Authority and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

The bridge was closed by authorities for about an hour after the initial report was received.

UPDATE Friday, Nov. 6 2:30 p.m.

Authorities in Charles County have confirmed that an unidentified motorist jumped off the Harry Nice Bridge around noon this afternoon. Police closed the bridge, which spans the Potomac River, connecting Maryland to Virginia,  while police conducted an investigation. A source close to the story told The BayNet recovery operations were being conducted by a local fire department.

No further information is available at this time.


UPDATE

Traffic on the Harry Nice Bridge is again moving normally. There are unconfirmed reports that someone may have been attempting to jump off the bridge.


Police have the Harry Nice Bridge shut down until further notice due to a police related incident. As we saw on traffic cam, police had a vehicle surrounded, but the traffic cam has been turned around.
