Dowell, MD – A fire at the height of the Presidentsโ€™ Day snow storm caused $151,000 damage to a Calvert County home, state investigators reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office, 50 firefighters from Solomons, St. Leonard, Bay District and Hollywood were dispatched to the one-alarm blaze on Hamit Road in Dowell around 9:16 a.m. The firefighters brought the blaze under control in 15 minutes. No injuries were reported.

โ€œThe fire started in the chimney and extended throughout the house,โ€ Dfm. Don Brenneman reported. โ€œThe family was displaced and they are being assisted by family members.โ€ Brenneman stated the fire was accidental.

The owner of the one-story house was identified as Vincent R. Johnson.

At 9:50 a.m., authorities at the scene of a house fire in Dowell have reported that Dowell Road has been “completely shut down” due to the ongoing work to control the fire and due to the icy conditions. Water used to fight the fire has made the road more treacherous. Motorists must avoid the area until further notice


Dowell, MD – On Monday, Feb. 15 at approximately 9:15 a.m. crews from Calvert and St. Mary’s counties were dispatched to a house fire on Hammett Road off Dowell Road in the Dowell area.

Sources report fire is showing from the house and fire trucks were being hampered by weather conditions in an effort to access the site.

Several crews are on the scene, firefighters are currently inside the dwelling working to bring the blaze under control.
