UPDATE 02/06/2012 12:20AM (POLICE PRESS RELEASE):
On February 5, 2012 at approximately 1748 hours, Troopers from the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack responded to the area of MD Rt. 6 east of MD Rt. 235, Mechanicsville, STM, MD for a reported single vehicle collision. Preliminary scene investigation revealed the driver lost control, traveled off the roadway, over compensated, crossing the center line and east bound lane of MD Rt. 6 and subsequently collided with a tree. The driver, Jason M. Denton, 24 years of age, was transported from the scene to PG Shock Trauma via MSP Trooper 7, with life threatening injuries. The passenger, Paul S. Burnett 2nd, 32 years of age, was pronounced deceased on scene. Notification to next of kin was made by Trooper’s from the MSP Leonardtown Barrack. Driver speed and alcohol was a contributing circumstance to the collision. Investigation is being conducted by the MSP Crash Team.
At 5:49PM on Sunday, February 5, 2012, rescue crews were alerted for the personal injury accident in the area of the Korner Karryout in Mechanicsville with reports of a single vehicle into a tree and smoking with 2 subjects trapped, one of them without a pulse.
Police were first on the scene to advise that it was just north of the Korner Karryout and that there was heavy entrapment. Squad 2 arrived on location to confirm previous reports with the vehicle in the parking lot of the Korner Karryout on the north side. As crews worked aggressively to free the heavily entrapped patients, reports came confirming that there was a single fatality and one patient in critical condition shortly followed by a request for a helicopter for transport to a trauma center.
At 6:32 PM. Trooper 7 was enroute to P.G. Shock Trauma with the patient who was a male in his 20’s and had a patent airway, but had a head injury and was combative. Units from Mechanicsville VFD remained on the scene to assist in the investigation.
The last fire/EMS unit cleared the scene at 9:42 PM.
