fatal accident in southern maryland

EDGEWATER, Md. — A passenger involved in a head-on collision last week in Anne Arundel County has died from her injuries, authorities confirmed Monday, as the driver responsible for the crash faces additional legal scrutiny.

The collision occurred on February 17, 2025, at approximately 1:50 p.m. on Mitchells Chance Road near Hamlet Club Drive. According to the Anne Arundel County Police Department, Joseph Henry Illig Jr., 63, of Edgewater, was driving a 2020 Chevrolet pickup truck when he veered into oncoming traffic and struck a 2015 Ford pickup truck head-on. The Ford’s passenger, identified as Mary Elizabeth Cox, 74, of Upper Marlboro, suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Cox succumbed to her injuries on February 22, police said. Investigators with the department’s Crash Reconstruction Team continue to review the case and are working with the Office of the State’s Attorney to determine if additional charges will be filed against Illig.

At the scene, officers reported that Illig displayed obvious signs of impairment, including slurred speech, an unsteady gait, and a strong odor of alcohol. When questioned, he appeared confused and could not recall where he was or how the crash had occurred. He later admitted to consuming vodka before driving.

Standardized field sobriety tests were conducted, and Illig allegedly failed multiple components, prompting officers to take him into custody. A subsequent breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of .18, more than twice the legal limit in Maryland.

Authorities determined that Illig had been traveling in the wrong lane before colliding with the Ford. While the 78-year-old male driver of the Ford was not injured, Cox’s critical injuries led to more serious legal implications for Illig.

Following his arrest, Illig was held without bond and appeared before Judge Eileen A. Reilly for a bail review hearing on February 18. The judge ordered him to remain in custody pending further proceedings.

Illig, who has previous DUI convictions, is scheduled to appear in Annapolis District Court on April 11, 2025. If convicted, his prior offenses could significantly impact his sentencing.

Anne Arundel County police continue to investigate the crash, and prosecutors are expected to announce whether additional charges will be filed in light of Cox’s death.

  1. I am so very sorry for the Cox family. A precious life taken too soon because of someone’s irresponsible actions. I too was hit by a drunk driver back in 2017. I survived, he did not…

  2. I wonder if he had left a local bar or restaurant and got drunk there ?
And if so ,is that bar going to be charged as being responsible for him being so intoxicated ?
I am a advocate for life on prison for drunks that dont kill while driving and the death penalty for those that do.
