One person was seriously injured when a motor vehicle exploded in Calvert County shortly after noon Monday, Dec. 10, the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department (Company 6) reported.ย  According to Company 6 Chief Jonathan Riffe, the incident occurred on Dorothy Drive in Sunderland. Units were dispatched to the site after a resident reported hearing an explosion. Riffe said the resident told authorities the explosion โ€œshook the house.โ€

ย

Responders from Company 6 and the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department arrived and found the vehicle โ€œcompletely blown apart,โ€ Riffe stated in a report posted on the Company 6 web site. The chief reported โ€œone person was โ€œsuffering from flash burns, a broken femur, broken arm and other traumatic internal injuries.โ€

ย

A Maryland State Police helicopter landed at the site but Riffe said due to the inclement weather responders decided to transport the injured person to Prince Georgeโ€™s Shock Trauma.

ย

The name of the injured person has not been released. A call to the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal to determine if the incident is under investigation had not been returned as this story was being filed.
