One person was seriously injured when a motor vehicle exploded in Calvert County shortly after noon Monday, Dec. 10, the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department (Company 6) reported. According to Company 6 Chief Jonathan Riffe, the incident occurred on Dorothy Drive in Sunderland. Units were dispatched to the site after a resident reported hearing an explosion. Riffe said the resident told authorities the explosion “shook the house.”
Responders from Company 6 and the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department arrived and found the vehicle “completely blown apart,” Riffe stated in a report posted on the Company 6 web site. The chief reported “one person was “suffering from flash burns, a broken femur, broken arm and other traumatic internal injuries.”
A Maryland State Police helicopter landed at the site but Riffe said due to the inclement weather responders decided to transport the injured person to Prince George’s Shock Trauma.
The name of the injured person has not been released. A call to the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal to determine if the incident is under investigation had not been returned as this story was being filed.
