OWINGS MILLS, MD – As part of Maryland Public Television’s continuing commitment to honor and support the region’s military veterans, the station’s State Circle program has introduced a new segment titled “Salute to Veterans”. Its purpose is to recognize veterans and veterans organizations making a difference in their communities and to share their stories. A new segment will air each month. State Circle, part of MPT’s Public Square programming block, can be seen on Fridays at 7:30 p.m.
Initial segments this summer featured the Frostburg State University’s Student Veterans’ Service and its efforts to help veterans earn a college degree, and John J. “Jack” Farley III, a disabled Vietnam veteran and retired U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims judge who has defied the odds to make a difference in fellow veterans’ lives. The next segment, scheduled to air later this month, highlights a Maryland chapter of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association. The group participates in motorcycle-related events and donates funds to veteran care facilities and charities.
MPT launched its veterans initiative in 2012 with MPT Salutes Vietnam Veterans, to recognize and thank the region’s men and women who served in the military during the Vietnam era. Highlights included the three-hour MPT documentary Maryland Vietnam War Stories and LZ Maryland, a two-day public event which drew more than 16,000 veterans and guests to the Maryland State Fairgrounds in June 2016. MPT is also a commemorative partner the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, a program of the U.S. Department of Defense.
MPT’s State Circle has reported on Maryland news and politics for more than 30 years. Host Jeff Salkin and reporter Charles Robinson bring in-depth analysis of major political issues, pending bills, and other state news of interest to viewers. Interviews with experts shed light on various viewpoints and actions around the state.
