LA PLATA, Md. — Maryland State Police troopers and other first responders helped evacuate 32 residents from Sage Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in La Plata after an early morning fire filled part of the facility with smoke.
Shortly before 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 28, troopers from the Maryland State Police La Plata Barrack responded after fire compromised one of the facility’s wings.
Trooper First Class Sabock, Trooper Wood and Sgt. Davis joined members of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, La Plata Police Department and local fire department personnel in making their way through thick smoke to begin evacuating residents from the affected wing.
Working together, staff members and first responders moved 32 residents from the wing to another area of the facility.
After the evacuation, law enforcement personnel went back through the building to make sure no one had been left behind and that every resident was accounted for.
One resident was injured during the evacuation and transported to a local hospital. A police officer was evaluated at the scene but was not transported.
Approximately 55 firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire, which was brought under control in about 20 minutes.
Deputy State Fire Marshals later determined the blaze was caused by an electrical malfunction involving an exterior security light. Investigators found the fire originated near the light and spread into the attic above the facility’s 300 wing.
Maryland State Police praised TFC Sabock, Trooper Wood, Sgt. Davis and the other first responders involved for their actions during the evacuation.
