La Plata, MD – Itโ€™s never a good idea to violate the terms of your probation.

That was the lesson learned by Derek Williamson, 46 of La Plata, as he appeared before Charles County Circuit Court Judge Any J. Bragunier Thursday, Aug. 20 for sentencing reconsideration.

โ€œMr. Williamson was sentenced to 18 months with work release,โ€ Charles County Assistant Public Defender Michele Harewood told Bragunier.

โ€œThe court gave him a chance to have his sentence reconsidered if he entered a substance abuse program,โ€ Harewood added. โ€œAgent Griffin [of the Charles County Parole and Probation Office] made an attempt to get him in a program. He did not report.

โ€œWhen he did report, he was told the class was full,โ€ she said. โ€œHe is waiting on a starting date.โ€

โ€œHe didnโ€™t do what you asked him to do,โ€ said Charles County Assistant Stateโ€™s Attorney Tiffany Campbell. โ€œThe state is asking for his sentenced to begin today.โ€

โ€œHe has had more than several opportunities,โ€ the agent told the court. โ€œClasses did start. There are three starting now that he did not enroll in.โ€

Bragunier agreed with the state. The defendant was placed in handcuffs and told that he would serve the full term of 18 months and that he was to enroll in jail-based treatment for substance abuse.
