The Southern Maryland Regional Library Association, Inc. (SMRLA) welcomes Mark Volland as its new communications manager. He joined SMRLA December 2, 2019, and is charged with providing internal and external communications support to promote the association’s role as a regional resource center for the public libraries in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties.

Volland, a Waldorf resident, comes to SMRLA from Calvert County Government where he was deputy director of communications and media relations. He has 24 years of experience in communications, marketing and media relations with a variety of Southern Maryland organizations. “We are very pleased to have Mark on our team,” said SMRLA CEO Sharan Marshall.

“He brings to SMRLA a broad set of skills and experience that will serve us well in meeting our vision to advance regional library excellence.” Formed in 1959, SMRLA supports the three Southern Maryland library systems through efficient, coordinated services that county libraries cannot adequately provide themselves.

SMRLA operates the tricounty circulation and online catalog system known as COSMOS (Collections of Southern Maryland’s On-Line System); provides access to downloadable books, ebooks, online research and information resources, and other free electronic services; runs the region’s interlibrary loan system for books and materials; and organizes inservice training for library staff.
