Prince Frederick, MD – For the second year in a row a panel of judges has selected a retired school teacher as Calvert County’s “Most Beautiful.” The 2015 Calvert You Are Beautiful Volunteer Awards Ceremony was held Tuesday, Sept. 22 at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Prince Frederick campus.
From the list of nominees—20 individuals, one couple and two organizations—one was selected for special recognition. This year’s honoree is Dorothy “Dotty” Williams Greene. She was nominated by Nancy W. Zinn and Barbara McKimmie. In their nomination submission, Zinn and McKimmie noted that Greene “has had a long and successful career with a total of 28 years of supporting the learning and growth of youth.”
During her career in education, Greene taught in Montgomery, Prince George’s and Calvert county schools.
She became a member of the Calvert County Fair Board in 1986. A few years after starting her service on the board, Greene helped start Youth Day at the Calvert County Fair. The Friday of fair week always draws a huge crowd and is now well into its second generation of giving Calvert County Public Schools’ student population one of the best days off ever. Greene is currently Youth Day co-chair.
As a member of the St. Leonard Vision Group (SLVC) Board of Directors and “Spirit Committee,” Greene helps organize SLVC annual Easter Egg hunt.
As is the case with many of the Calvert You Are Beautiful top honorees, Greene was almost at a loss for words when Commissioners’ President Steve Weems announced her name. Obviously surprised and touched, Greene told the audience “I think what I do is just—Calvert County has given me so much. What I do is just try to repay them and give back.”
Greene is also a member of the Port Republic School #7 One-Room Schoolhouse Committee. That committee also was nominated for the award.
Other nominees were:
Mary Baldwin, a fulltime volunteer with Patuxent Animal Welfare League; Annette Bourne, transportation manager for Safe Nights of Calvert County; Linda Natoli Gaither, volunteer coordinator of The Autism Project; Martha Grahame, a volunteer educator for the Calvert Nature Society; Janie Hanko, a volunteer with several groups, including Project Echo and “Shop with a Cop;” Gwendolyn James, a volunteer senior arts and crafts teacher; Laura Kellner, organizer of the “Run for the Bay 5K;” Nancy Lehman, a Commission on Aging volunteer; Phyllis Lester, who assists veterans at Gray-Ray American Legion Post; Michael Lewis Sr.; chief engineer for the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department; Ilse Metz, a Calvert Marine Museum volunteer; Penny Moran, a volunteer at Flag Ponds Park; Amy Plummer, a Bayside History Museum volunteer; Jennifer Purcell, who aids Northern Middle School PTSA, the Boy Scouts and Freedom Hill Horse Rescue; Amanda C.
