A Waldorf homeโ€™s occupants were displaced by a fire that apparently started in a malfunctioning compact refrigerator. The fire at the single-story, wood-framed house on Old Washington Road was reported at 5:41 a.m. Tuesday by the occupant, Eli Espino.

According to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office, the fire started in the bedroom of the house and caused an estimated $30,000. Thirty volunteers from Waldorf, La Plata, Brandywine, Baden, Bryans Road, Clinton and Hughesville fire departments responded and brought the fire under control in five minutes.

The occupants are staying with friends.

The fire was investigated by Deputy Fire Marshal John Nelson, who listed the preliminary cause as accidental.
