CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. – The suspect wanted for a fatal shooting in February is in custody in Colorado. He’s identified as 30-year-old Jabari McCoy of Capitol Heights. He’s charged with the murder of 45-year-old David Downs of Capitol Heights.
On February 23, 2026, at approximately 11:20 am, officers responded to a shooting in the 5200 block of Marlboro Pike in the unincorporated section of Capitol Heights. Once on scene, they located the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Through various investigative techniques, detectives identified the suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. Members of the PGPD’s Fugitive Unit, which is part of the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, determined McCoy was in Colorado. With the assistance of a U.S. Marshals Service Task Force in Colorado, he was taken into custody on Monday.
The preliminary investigation revealed the suspect and victim were known to each other. Detectives believe the shooting stemmed from an argument.
The suspect is charged with first and second degree murder and related charges. McCoy remains in Colorado pending extradition to Prince George’s County.
