A wanted man led police on a wild chase Friday that zigzagged southern St. Maryโ€™s County, before ending in a crash on Great Mills Road in Lexington Park at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Police arrested Guy Vivian Butler, 42 of Mechanicsville, seconds after he crashed a Ford Windstar with tinted windows near Saratoga Drive. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, but one Sheriffโ€™s cruiser received minor damage during the chase.

The chase started on Chancellors Run Road near Foxchase when St. Maryโ€™s Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) detectives attempted to stop Butler driving a vehicle reported stolen in Charles County. Bulter was wanted for “failure to appeal” also also in connection with recent burglaries, BCI commander Rick Burris said.

As the vehicle fled on Chancellorโ€™s Run and then north on Route 5, all available police in the area were alerted to the pursuit. The vehicle was traveling at a high speeds, passing cars on the shoulder and over the double yellow, nearly crashing several times.

The chase continued on to Indian Bridge Road to Route 4. Police stopped traffic all along Route 235 as the vehicle and trail of following police approached. Calvert County officials were contacted and police were preparing to lay down โ€œstop sticksโ€ on the other side of the bridge.

The fleeing driver turned onto FDR Drive and into the Staples parking lot before continuing on Route 235 south, and eventually back onto to Great Mills Road where it ended.

Butler struck a pole and was apprehended. He was taken to St. Mary’s County Hospital complaining of back pain.

Charges are forthcoming.
