The Southern Maryland Blues Festival drew a good crowd to the Calvert County Fairgrounds Saturday, Aug. 23 and Sunday, Aug. 24. The Saturday segment was challenged by off and on rain. However, the performers and devotees were undeterred.

The fest featured a splendid blend of blues, soul and Zydeco. Headliners were the legendary Leon Russell, who closed the fest Sunday evening and The Spin Doctors, who wrapped up day one. Other performers on the bill included New Orleans soul diva Irma Thomas, the Royal Southern Brotherhood, Guitar Shorty, Mac Arnold, Jonothan Boogie Long, Rich Robinson (of Black Crowes fame), Samantha Fish, Bobby Messano, the Southern Maryland Sisterhood of Soul and Nathan and the Zydeco Cha-Chas.

A variety of food vendors served up huge quantities of barbeque and seafood, along with savory side dishes.

โ€œIโ€™m from Louisiana but I feel like Iโ€™m home,โ€ said Nathan Williams, who frequently uses the line when he and his Zydeco troupe play events in locations throughout the country.

Indeed, the hometown folks got the benefit of the weekend show. This yearโ€™s festival raised funds for Safe Harbor Inc., which runs a shelter for women and children who are victims of domestic violence; and BRASS CAMP (BRothers and SiSters), which aids children with cancer by providing them with a variety of outdoor activities, camaraderie and empathy.

In addition to the vendors, over 100 volunteers also work the grounds to make the festival a success. The two-day festival is a presentation of Chesapeake Bay Events.
