CALVERT COUNTY, Md. — November brings more exciting new businesses to Calvert County, ranging from restaurants to designers to pet salons. This month, we decided to visit some newly opened local businesses to check out what they offer.
The holiday season is a great time to discover new local favorites, both for gift-giving reasons and to start preparing for whatever the new year brings. Plus, you may want to add a few gift cards to your own list. As always, this isn’t a complete list. Calvert’s What’s Going Where map and New and Expanding Businesses page offer a glimpse into what’s coming in the county.
Check out these four exciting new businesses here. And when you’re done, we hope you go see for yourself and get to know more of our area’s local entrepreneurs.
Paws and Relax
Located at 98 Central Square Drive in Prince Frederick, this luxury pet grooming salon strives to provide high-quality grooming services at a reasonable price. This is a beautiful, open space with comfortable spots for pet owners to relax and have a cup of coffee if they stick around for the appointment. The owners, Alyssa and Cheyenne, promise a “stress-free” experience on their website, and we saw two happy little dogs during our visit. Paws and Relax is open 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday to Friday. You can call or contact them online for an appointment.

Sip and Stack
This adorable, earthy and delicious café is located at 78 Solomons Island Road in Prince Frederick. The menu has a select offering of sandwiches, salads, wraps, sides and drinks, and everything was fresh and tasty. Customers so far are loving having this healthy, quality option, and we saw plenty of people stop by to pick up lunch orders while we were there. Seating is limited to just two outside tables, but there’s a super picturesque bench you can sit on while you wait for to-go orders. Sip and Stack is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.

Thai Zapp Grocery
This Thai grocery store, at 10347 Southern Maryland Blvd., is a great addition to the Dunkirk shopping area. We found plenty of Asian snacks and ingredients — and not just Thai products. The store had staples like rice and ramen, sesame oil, fish sauce and so much more. We loved exploring the snack section, which takes up a decent portion of the store, and seeing all the different treats from around the world. If you need to stock up on rice, this is the place to do it. We took home a big bag of quality jasmine rice that will probably last all winter. Thai Zapp Grocery is open 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday.

SOMD Knockout Zone
Located at 10818 Town Center Blvd. in Dunkirk, SOMD Knockout Zone is a high-energy, woman-owned boxing and fitness studio. The gym delivers boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai–inspired workouts, TRX training and functional strength sessions in a motivating, community-driven environment. According to a representative from the gym, each class blends heavy-bag work with conditioning drills, and members track their performance using Impact Wrap — a points-based technology system that measures power, speed and output in real time. The gym offers over 100 classes weekly, and members can choose from coached classes, non-coached training times, kids’ boxing programs and specialty sessions. SOMD Knockout Zone is open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. You can see the class schedule and read about membership options online.

We definitely hope you enjoy visiting and supporting these new local businesses as much as we did. And if you’re launching a business soon, let us know!
