Charlotte Hall, MD – A construction worker who was helping move a large refrigerator at a St. Maryโ€™s County liquor store Sunday, March 22 was flown to Washington Hospital Center after sustaining injuries, local fire officials reported.

The incident occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. at Lighthouse Liquors in Charlotte Hall. According to Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department (Company 2) Assistant Chief Mark Towbridge, the unidentified worker was helping move the refrigerator following a fire that had occurred earlier in the afternoon. โ€œThey thought the power was off,โ€ Towbridge stated. However, a surge of power shocked the worker, causing injuries.

Towbridge reported no CPR was required. No information on the manโ€™s condition is available at this time.

The fire at the store occurred about an hour prior to the work accident. The blaze was out when crews arrived.ย 

In addition to Company 2, personnel from St. Maryโ€™s Advanced Life Support and Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the scene.

Tom Dennison, a spokesman for Southern Maryland Electrical Cooperative (SMECO), confirmed SMECOโ€™s Safety Department also conducted an investigation of the incident.
