Southern Maryland Soap Box Derby Director for the Third District Optimists, Jim Warnick was quite pleased with the turn out for this year’s Soap Box Derby races in Leonardtown on Saturday, June 6.”Last year we struggled to get 24 racers and ended up with 25. This year we had 27,” said Warnick.

After multiple heats and some fierce competition, two champions emerged and are headed to the World Championships in Akron, OH this July. Elizabeth Beaton, 10 was the Stock Division Champion and Matthew Baumann, 12 prevailed with his Super Stock racer.

“The next step is that we have to fill out the paperwork and they will be representing Southern Maryland at the World Championships,” beaming Warnick.

This year also marked a year in which the Third District Optimists asked for donated cars to help those less fortunate to compete in the fun racing event. “We had two cars donated, one by a business and one by a family,” said Warnick.
