
BALTIMORE – Residents across Maryland reported feeling an earthquake Friday morning, the epicenter of which was located in New Jersey.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded on April 5, 2024, at approximately 10:23 a.m. near Lebanon, New Jersey.

The specific location was recorded 2.9 miles below at 40.683N 74.753W, placing it around 45 miles west of New York City and 50 miles north of Philadelphia.

Although seismic activity is not common in Maryland, the state has experienced several minor quakes over the past 15 years.
The last time Maryland felt an earthquake was in January when a 2.3-magnitude quake struck around 1 a.m. on Jan. 23, approximately 2 miles west of Rockville. The quake had a preliminary depth of about 9.5 miles.
A few other earthquakes have occurred in the area since 2011. Notably, in August 2011, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake centered in Virginia was felt in Maryland. It was among the largest to occur in the region in the last century.
