
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A 77-year-old man was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon after an explosion occurred while he was reportedly mixing chemicals inside a detached shed at an Annapolis residence.
The explosion was reported around 2 p.m. on June 2, 2026, in the 3000 block of Friends Road. The incident happened in a detached shed on the property and caused significant structural damage.
Neighbors heard a loud boom and saw smoke coming from the area of the property, according to officials. They responded and found the 77-year-old man in distress before providing basic medical care until first responders arrived.
The man sustained severe injuries and was flown by Maryland State Police Aviation to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for immediate treatment. He remained in serious condition, according to officials.
No other injuries were reported.
The response involved the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, Annapolis City Fire Department, fire and arson/explosives investigators, and federal officials. First responders secured the scene and worked to mitigate any potential hazards after the explosion.
Investigators are working to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding the blast.
