LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A review of St. Mary’s County Public Schools’ cell phone policy showed a significant drop in student disciplinary referrals, student board member Hannah Heisler told the Board of Education on Wednesday.
The policy, implemented earlier this school year, aims to curb in-class distractions. While student opinions on the restrictions vary, Heisler emphasized that early data indicates a positive impact. “The numbers show a decrease in referrals, and we’re actively gathering student feedback to continue refining the approach,” she said.
The issue was among several discussed at the Superintendent Student Leadership Council meeting, where students also engaged in hands-on team-building exercises and held direct discussions with district leaders.
The school board expressed interest in continuing to evaluate the policy’s effectiveness, balancing student input with classroom management goals.
