CLEMENTS, Md. — It’s time to gear up for the annual St. Mary’s County National Lawn Mower Races, organized by the local Seventh District Optimist Club and Seventh District Volunteer Rescue Squad. When people think of lawn mowers, they usually imagine enjoying a cold beer while mowing the grass on a Saturday afternoon. However, the excitement of lawn mower racing has taken St. Mary’s County by storm, offering an entertaining twist on what is often a repetitive chore.
We’re proud to continue this tradition for all lawn mower enthusiasts, as well as anyone just looking for some weekend fun. On Aug. 1 and 2, racers and spectators alike are invited to Bowles Farms for a weekend of family-friendly excitement.
Both the Seventh District Optimist Club and the Seventh District Volunteer Rescue Squad exist to promote the well-being of the community — whether by providing mentorship to St. Mary’s County youth or by administering pre-hospital care to the citizens of the county. While both organizations are based in the Seventh District, their impact extends far beyond the local community, with a reach that stretches across the nation.
Several of the lawn mower race participants have been coming to St. Mary’s for years because of the warm welcome they receive, fostering long-standing friendships and encouraging the next generation to enjoy the races.
This event also highlights several local businesses whose sponsorship makes it possible to hold such a successful event. By jointly hosting events like the lawn mower races, these organizations create an opportunity for the entire family to come together and have fun.
The proceeds from the lawn mower races will be donated to both the Optimist Club and the Rescue Squad, allowing both volunteer organizations to continue serving the community throughout the year. These funds help support events like the annual youth fishing derby, which is free to the public. At the derby, children can win prizes and enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers with their families.
Additionally, the Seventh District Volunteer Rescue Squad hosts an annual “Safe Stop” on Halloween, where kids can come dressed in their favorite costumes and trick-or-treat safely. Events like these would not be possible without the continued support and generous financial contributions from the community.
