PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert High School teacher Bill Voshell, named Calvert County’s 2024-25 Teacher of the Year earlier this year, was recognized Sept. 26 at the 35th annual Maryland Teacher of the Year Gala in Baltimore.
Voshell joined 23 other county-level honorees at the event, which highlighted educators from every Maryland school district. State officials described the group as “the best of the best,” recognizing them as ambassadors for public education.
Although Voshell was not selected as one of the seven state finalists announced Sept. 5, Calvert County Public Schools emphasized the significance of his nomination. “This nomination highlights Mr. Voshell’s dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to inspiring students and shaping the future,” the district said in a statement. “We’re incredibly proud to have him as part of our CCPS family.”

This year’s finalists are: Jacqueline Sanderson of Anne Arundel County; Jevons Liu of Baltimore City; ALonna Soward-Puryear of Frederick County; Natalie Pretzello of Howard County; Marcie Mamas of Queen Anne’s County; Emma Cohn Matthews of Wicomico County; and Phillip Cropper of Worcester County.
Voshell, who teaches social studies, civics, world history and criminal justice, was joined at the gala by family, colleagues, and district leaders, including Interim Superintendent Marcus Newsome and Board of Education President Jana Smith-Post.
Before joining Calvert High in 2014, Voshell worked at the National Archives and in corporate roles where he developed a mentoring program. He later earned a master’s degree in TESOL from McDaniel College, experiences that have shaped his classroom approach.
The statewide Maryland Teacher of the Year winner — chosen from the seven finalists — will go on to represent Maryland in the National Teacher of the Year program.
