PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — A Chesapeake Beach man is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after a DUI traffic stop escalated into a violent confrontation with deputies in Calvert County on April 25, 2026.
Dawson Michael Orlowski, 25, of Chesapeake Beach, was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and obstructing and hindering, according to court documents.
The incident began around 10:25 p.m. when a deputy observed a vehicle driving erratically on Bayside Road, including traveling on rumble strips and crossing into oncoming lanes. The vehicle continued onto the shoulder near Traders Seafood and then abruptly jerked back into traffic, prompting a traffic stop near Chesapeake Village Boulevard.
Upon making contact, the driver, identified as Orlowski, reportedly showed clear signs of impairment, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and a strong odor of alcohol. Field sobriety tests were attempted, but deputies noted he was unable to maintain balance and could not safely complete the evaluations.
A preliminary breath test later indicated a blood alcohol concentration of 0.241, according to the report.
While being processed, Orlowski became increasingly combative, yelling profanities and threatening deputies. Authorities reported that he balled his fists, spat in a deputy’s face, and struck an officer during the confrontation.
Deputies ultimately placed Orlowski on the ground and secured him in handcuffs. Officials also reported continued disorderly behavior while in custody.
Orlowski was transported to the Calvert County Detention Center following the incident.
He was later released on his own recognizance after a bond review.
A preliminary hearing is set for May 27, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. in Calvert District Court, Courtroom 2.
Under Maryland law, first-degree assault carries a maximum penalty of up to 25 years in prison, while second-degree assault carries up to 10 years. Reckless endangerment carries up to 5 years incarceration, and obstructing and hindering is also a criminal offense punishable by additional jail time.
