LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — In homes across St. Mary’s County, a handful of dogs are settling into couches, learning routines and showing off their personalities, all while waiting for something more permanent.
Through the foster program at St. Mary’s County Animal Services, these dogs are getting a second chance not just at adoption, but at being truly understood.
Currently living in foster homes, Mamacita, Scooby and Skye are among the adoptable pets benefiting from the program, which allows shelter staff to learn more about each dog’s temperament, habits and needs in a real home environment.
“Living in home environments has helped the shelter learn even more about their personalities and needs,” the shelter shared in a recent post.
Meet The Dogs
Mamacita — A Gentle Senior Ready to Love

At nearly 10 years old, Mamacita is the most seasoned of the group and likely the most appreciative of a quiet, loving home. As a pit bull mix, she brings both loyalty and a calm presence, ideal for someone looking for a slower-paced companion.
Scooby — Big Puppy Energy
At just 11 months old, Scooby is still very much a puppy. The Great Dane mix is expected to grow into his large frame, bringing with him playful energy and a need for space to stretch out, and plenty of love to give.
Skye — A Balanced Companion
At 2 years old, Skye sits at a perfect middle ground, past the puppy phase but still full of life. Shelter staff say foster care has helped highlight her personality, making it easier to match her with the right family.
All three dogs are spayed or neutered and ready to go home, according to the shelter.
Why Foster Matters
The foster program plays a critical role in helping dogs transition from shelter life to permanent homes. By living with families, even temporarily, dogs are able to decompress, develop routines and reveal behaviors that may not be visible in a kennel environment.
For potential adopters, that means more insight — and a better match.
Those interested in meeting any of the dogs are encouraged to call ahead to schedule a visit.
