UPDATE – 5/12/2026 – Mechanicsville Woman Charged With DUI After Thomas Johnson Bridge Rollover Crash
SOLOMONS, Md. — One person was airlifted to a trauma center and a driver was arrested following a serious three vehicle rollover crash Sunday night on the Thomas Johnson Bridge.
The crash, which temporarily shut down the bridge between Calvert and St. Mary’s counties, was reported shortly after 8 p.m. May 10, 2026, after an SUV overturned during the collision.
Emergency crews arriving on scene found three heavily damaged vehicles and multiple occupants requiring medical evaluation.
Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 7 transported one adult patient to Capital Region Medical Center for treatment. Several additional patients were evaluated at the scene, with at least two signing care refusal forms after assessment by EMS personnel.
During the investigation, deputies administered field sobriety tests to one driver, who was later arrested at the scene. Authorities have not released the identity of the driver or any potential charges.
The bridge remained closed for an extended period while crews cleared debris and investigators processed the crash scene before reopening later Sunday night.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

With all the wrecks on the TJ bridge, maybe some sobriety check points & speed enforcement. Both Charles County and St. Mary’s LEO’S?
Makes sense to me but it would be Calvert and St. Marys. Even better if the MD State Police would get involved.
I think you mean Calvert and St. Mary’s, but I get where you’re coming from.
Homeboy–you got the wrong county…CALVERT and St. Marys are connected by this bridge, not Charles. There are more DUI patrols and speed traps in Calvert than any other county in Southern MD.
i believe that a speed camera that issues tickets should be installed somewhere on the bridge
We need a better bridge, and lastnight proved that. Not only were people stuck in traffic for 2+ hours, the first responders don’t have alot of room to move around on the 2 lane bridge with no shoulders. This current bridge is also the evacuation route for everyone living south of the CCNF, and if something happens there no one is getting out.
