Newburg House Fire Causes $300K In Damage, Resident Taken To Hospital

NEWBURG, Md. — A house fire in Newburg caused an estimated $300,000 in damage Saturday morning and sent one resident to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The fire was reported at approximately 10:37 a.m. Aug. 8 to the 11700 block of Cuckold Creek Road.

Firefighters arrived to find a two-story single-family home with heavy fire conditions. The blaze eventually involved both the first and second floors and required a large mutual-aid response.

The State Fire Marshal said the fire originated in a first-floor bedroom. The cause remains under investigation.

A total of 62 firefighters, including crews from surrounding departments, responded to the one-alarm fire. The Newburg Volunteer Fire Department was listed as the primary responding department.

The fire took approximately two hours to bring under control.

The homeowner discovered the fire, according to the report.

One adult resident was transported to UM Charles Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The State Fire Marshal estimated damage at $200,000 to the structure and $100,000 to the contents.

One person was displaced as a result of the fire.

Because of the home’s location and limited water access, firefighters established an extensive rural water-supply operation. Tenth District Volunteer Fire Department’s Fire Boat 8 was specially requested and traveled by water to the property, where crews used the creek to provide a continuous water supply for firefighting and overhaul operations.

Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department and EMS said mutual-aid crews from Charles County, St. Mary’s County and King George County operated at the scene for approximately five hours.

All occupants were accounted for.

The fire remains under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
