BALTIMORE, Md. — More than two years after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed into the Patapsco River following a collision with a cargo ship in March 2024, Maryland is still feeling the effects. Lives were lost, traffic patterns were disrupted, and commuters and communities across the state continue to deal with the consequences of a disaster that transformed one of the Baltimore region’s most important transportation routes.
Now, work is underway to build the bridge that will take its place — but drivers still have years to wait before they can cross the Patapsco River there again. From a price tag that could reach $5.2 billion to a projected 2030 completion date, here’s what you need to know about the massive Key Bridge reconstruction project, where it stands today and what comes next.
Why Is The Key Bridge Important?

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was a vital piece of infrastructure in the Baltimore area, and its collapse has affected economic trends and traffic patterns all over Maryland. Carrying millions of commuters and trucks each year, the Key Bridge offered an essential connection between the different regions surrounding Baltimore.
Since the collapse, many drivers who crossed the Key Bridge on a daily basis have experienced an increase in commute time due to traffic. Many commuters have had to adjust their routes to make it to work, school or other activities. Some Maryland communities have even reported an increase in litter and fumes from the uptick in traffic, polluting their local environment.
Between the economic disruption and increased commute times, the Key Bridge’s collapse has had a significant impact on Central Maryland. The collapse has also affected drivers who commute to Baltimore from other regions in our state, like Southern Maryland and the Eastern Shore.
What Does The Rebuild Process Look Like?

Debris removal and demolition were the first phase of the rebuilding effort, offering a chance for the government to clean up debris left over after the 2024 collapse. As of August 2026, foundations for the new Key Bridge are being built while Maryland selects new contractors for four separate contracts.
In addition to cleaning up debris and building the spans for a new bridge, there is plenty of work to be done in between each phase. Environmental reviews, testing and contractor selection each take time, and they’re all of vital importance to the safety of residents and wildlife throughout Maryland.
Once the new contractors are picked, they will begin building the main span, towers, cables and other essential parts of the structure. According to official estimates, the Maryland government expects the new Key Bridge to be complete in late 2030.
How Is Maryland Funding The Key Bridge Rebuild?

The Key Bridge reconstruction project will cost around $4.3 billion to $5.2 billion, according to official estimates. The owners and operators of the ship that hit the Key Bridge and caused its collapse, Grace Ocean Private Limited and Synergy Marine Pte Ltd, are paying a portion of the cost.
Grace Ocean Private Limited and Synergy Marine Pte Ltd paid a $2.25 billion settlement in May 2026, which will significantly aid Maryland in the reconstruction process. Additionally, Congress approved full federal funding to cover the rest of the cost.
What Should Drivers And Businesses Expect From the Rebuilding Process?

Rebuilding the Key Bridge is a long process, so drivers and businesses within Maryland should expect the congested traffic flow around Baltimore City to persist for as long as the rebuilding process takes. Longer routes and increased traffic often require higher fuel costs, financially impacting freight operators and everyday drivers alike.
I-95 and I-895 have been particularly impacted by the collapse and will likely remain affected until construction on the new infrastructure is finished. Drivers can expect the Key Bridge to open in late 2030 or later, so you’ll need to continue using alternative routes for the foreseeable future.
