CALVERT, CHARLES AND ST. MARY’S COUNTIES, Md. — The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Southern Maryland and a large portion of the Baltimore-Washington region through 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27.
The watch was issued at 3:17 p.m. and includes Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties, along with Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, Montgomery, Howard and several other Maryland jurisdictions.
The District of Columbia and portions of Virginia and West Virginia are also included.
The National Weather Service says scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are possible through Thursday evening. The primary threats include damaging wind gusts and large hail, while isolated flooding could also occur, particularly in urban areas.
Southern Maryland communities listed within the watch area include Lexington Park, California, Callaway, Ridge, Piney Point, Sotterley, Chesapeake Beach, Dunkirk, Waldorf and St. Charles, among others.
A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for severe storms to develop. Residents should remain weather-aware and be prepared to move indoors if a warning is issued for their location.
Drivers should also use caution during heavy rain and avoid flooded roadways.
The watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday unless it is canceled or replaced by additional warnings.
