Barstow, MD – The steady pounding of the rain that characterized the previous two years of the Calvert County Fair gave way to other sounds—turkey gobbles, carnival calliope, Elvis and the songs rendered by hopeful contestants. The first full day of the 131st Calvert County Fair was blessed with brilliant sunshine.
Local seniors and special needs individuals were treated to lunch and the annual performance by Jim Godbold as Rockin’ Elvis. The senior king and queen were crowned.
Once the rides from Rosedale Attractions got cranked up the fairgrounds off Route 231 in Barstow came alive and the festive atmosphere that was missing last year returned.
Comedy illusionist Reggie Rice entertained his audience at the pavilion as the evening began. The Pirates of the Colombian Caribbean Aerial High Wire Thrill Show had kids and adults at the edge of their seats.
At 7 p.m. the 2017 Calvert Fair Idol contest got underway. Fair board member Dean Holland told the audience that 2017 is the eighth year the Idol contest has been held and served as the event’s signature entertainment attraction. “Before that we used to have bands,” said Holland. “But we thought why pay money for big bands when we have so much talent here in Calvert County.” The Calvert Idol Contest is open to young individuals living in Calvert, Charles, St. Mary’s, Prince George’s and Anne Arundel counties. Last year’s Idol winner, Chastity Jones of Hughesville, opened the show prior to the performances of the 2017 contestants. The hopefuls are vying for cash prizes–$300 for the third-place finisher, $500 for the second-place finisher and $1,000 for the first-place finisher. The contest concludes Saturday evening.
The Calvert County Fair continues until 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1. For more information visit the event web site at www.calvertcountyfair.com
