In order to support Southern Marylandโs largest employer, the U.S. Navy and itโs area installations, and to alleviate some of the tax burden for local citizens, Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) has requested federal funding for the projects a number of important local projects.
Advanced Energetics Research Lab Complex (Phase 2) Recipient:ย Indian Head Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center Address:ย 3767 Strauss Avenue, Building 20, Indian Head, MD 20640
Amount:ย $16.46 million
The Indian Head Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center is home to the largest concentration of munitions experts in the United States.ย Indian Head engineers helped develop the Navyโs Tomahawk missile, which was used to strike targets in Afghanistan during U.S.-led attacks on the Taliban in 2001.ย This funding will advance the construction of a new research center by consolidating work presently scattered across 19 different buildings into a single, more modern facility.ย Current buildings are antiquated, have outdated electrical systems, and lack isolation against environmental interference.ย This new facility will provide the tools and capabilities Indian Head engineers and scientists need to support U.S. military missions around the world.ย
Requested Defense Project Funding:
NAE Interoperability with Carrier and Expeditionary Group Forces Recipient:ย Patuxent River Surface and Aviation Interoperability Laboratory Address:ย Patuxent River, MD 20670 Amount:ย $5 million
Rapid communications between ships, airplanes and troops on the battlefield is critical to ensuring our military can accomplish its mission and protect itself from threats.ย The Patuxent River Surface and Aviation Interoperability (SAIL) facility is the U.S. Navyโs premier facility for testing and developing new command and control systems for Navy ships and aircraft.ย This funding will update the SAIL facility with the Navyโs Ship Self Defense System, allowing a wider range of simulations and test scenarios. This will improve the interoperability of communications systems of the Navyโs aircraft carrier battle groups which are the centerpiece of the U.S. naval power overseas.
Omni Directional Relay and Conformal Antenna Recipient:ย L3 Communications
Address:ย 22290 Exploration Drive, Lexington Park, MD 20653 Amount:ย $2.5 million
