Southern Maryland Military Installations to Receive $19,480,000 from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Funds to Allow Critical Military Upgrades to Move Forward, Create Local Job Opportunities
The Department of Defense announced this week that Southern Maryland’s military installations will receive $19,480,000 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Funding will go to the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head, MD, and the Naval Air Station Patuxent River for needed facility upgrades that will fulfill the goal of economic recovery by investing in job-creating projects.
“The goal of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is to rebuild our economy by investing in our communities, our people and our future. Approximately $4 billion dollars is in the pipeline for Maryland, making its way to every corner of the state, and working to create jobs and invest in needed projects,” stated Congressman Steny Hoyer. “This funding will allow Pax and Indian Head to move forward with these critical upgrades, further solidifying the federal commitment to these installations and demonstrating how the economic recovery plan is working to create job opportunities and invest in critical projects to get the economy moving.”
NAS Patuxent River will receive $17,000,000 for modernizing Hangar 110, which houses aircraft used for testing and evaluation. These funds will finance the final two phases of the modernization project, which will include newly refurbished hangar doors, an updated fire protection system, roof replacement, refurbished floors, and a newly painted exterior.
NSWC Indian Head will receive $2,480,000 to finance energy efficiency and conservation upgrades. Funding will allow the Navy more flexibility to implement energy initiatives such as converting existing lighting to more energy efficient systems, as well as installing more energy efficient HVAC systems and will reduce Indian Head’s overall utility costs by 10 percent a year.
